When Robert Saleh saw the weather Thursday morning, he made a quick decision to pull quarterback Aaron Rodgers from the Jets’ joint practice with the Commanders.

“He’s taken every rep in practice, so I felt like it was just unnecessary, heightened environment, unfamiliar foes in terms of taking care of one another,” Saleh said. “I just didn’t want to expose him to it, if it was a game, if it was a practice, if it was clean outside, he would’ve practiced today. Call it overprotection, but it was just the decision I made.”

The 40-year-old Rodgers is working his way back from the torn Achilles that ended his season after four snaps last year.

There have been no restrictions on him in practice, but Saleh opted to be safe with the franchise QB Thursday.

He said Rodgers wanted to practice.

“He pushed back. He wanted to go,” Saleh said. “But in the grand scheme of things, we’re trying to think forward thinking with regards to Week 1, and we’ve got a long way for that. We’ll have other opportunities coming up with Carolina and the Giants.”

Rodgers won’t play in the preseason opener against the Commanders on Saturday or in next week’s game against the Panthers.

Saleh has not ruled out Rodgers playing against the Giants in the preseason finale.

WR Mike Williams was back on the field Thursday.

Williams, who signed a one-year, $10 million deal with the Jets in March, had been on the PUP list to start training camp as he returns from an ACL tear that ended his 2023 season with the Chargers.

Williams did individual drills but did not participate in the team periods.

“The good news is, obviously he’s a lot further ahead than we anticipated,” Saleh said. “If I’m not mistaken, he was out at individual and some route running stuff early, so that’s going to kind of be his progression.

“He’ll be involved in all the walk-throughs, individual, routes on air, so for the next week or two, that’s about the extent of what we’ll see unless he starts feeling good, but we’ll anticipate him getting back into teamwork maybe a couple weeks from now.”

The Jets believe Williams will be ready to play in Week 1 against the 49ers.

Saleh would not reveal his playing time plans for Saturday.

He said he wanted to speak to the players about it first. The expectation is that very few starters will play.

Marty Lyons is leaving the Jets radio broadcast after 22 years in the booth.

The former Jets star will now serve as an ambassador for the team.

Former Jets TE Anthony Becht will replace Lyons in the broadcast booth.
