Making fun of callers’ accents isn’t off the table for WFAN’s Keith McPherson.
McPherson mocked a caller’s accent and then repeatedly doubled down on his decision after being called out on it by another caller in a cringeworthy clip from the overnight host’s show following the Mets’ 3-2 road win over the Yankees on Tuesday night.
“If anybody feels disrespected or feels like that was low, that’s fine. I really don’t care. I don’t think it was,” McPherson said. “I have no idea what kind of accent he has.”
Mocking an individual for their accent is generally considered a no-no, but McPherson opted for that tactic when the caller, “Chippy,” a self-proclaimed 35-year-old from Queens who said he also loves the Yankees, accused him of being biased against the Mets and for the Yankees.
The WFAN host is a full-fledged Yankees fan.
Chippy had a clear accent, which made it difficult to follow his point, and McPherson went on the attack.
“That call was chippy, Chippy. I don’t know what the hell you just said,” McPherson said. “I think I did pick up that, (accent imitation) ‘Ya don’t bash the Yankees.’ That’s cap. This whole show I’ve been bashing the Yankees organization, top to bottom. That dumb lineup they put out, and I know a lot of you guys hear what you want to hear and that’s fine. I can’t make you hear me. I know the Yankees fans, but (accent imitation) ‘Ya don’t call The Fan and say what I say 35 years’ — I don’t know what you’re saying, bro. I couldn’t understand you and the little bit that I picked up with, you’re wrong.”
McPherson’s actions did not go unnoticed with another caller phoning in later to call him out for his actions after introducing his take by saying he loves and respects him.
“I listen to a lot of this radio station and people take L’s, people take hits, but don’t make fun of a guy whose got a foreign accent because he’s making fun of your take. Come on, man, you’re better than that,” he said. “That’s too low of a move for someone whose on a radio station this popular in New York City.”
And that’s when McPherson began defending his actions without a hint of remorse.
“That’s a return serve,” McPherson replied. “He came at me. All I could make out…”
The caller interjected: “That’s a low-end return serve. Making fun of someone’s accent means that what he said you could not have returned to. That means you had to go to his accent.”
McPherson countered, this time withholding the impression: “All I could make out of his call was, ‘You’re biased, you bashed the Mets, you don’t bash the Yankees.’”
The caller, Abe from Brooklyn per Awful Announcing, held his ground.
“You answer what he said. You can’t make fun of his foreign accent because you couldn’t hear him,” he said. “Come on, Keith.”
But McPherson wasn’t having it.
“I definitely can. I think it’s a return serve. It’s fair. I couldn’t understand what he said,” McPherson said, before the caller again tried to show why it wasn’t necessary. “All I could make out, Abe, was, ‘You’re biased, you bash the Mets, you don’t bash the Yankees.’
“I talked back to him in his accent.”
Abe then offered his most scathing remark.
“I listen to a lot of this radio show, nobody’s that low they got to make fun of someone’s accent, man” he said.
It would have been easy for McPherson to at least acknowledge his caller’s point, but McPherson kept insisting he did no wrong.
“Done and done, return serve. I told him call back if he wanted to slow down,” McPherson said. “None of this is that serious. None of this is that personal. We’re all strangers.
“Whatever his name was — Chippy? Like I said, that call was chippy, I couldn’t understand you bro.”
McPherson eventually conceded that he appreciated the feedback, but continued to show his stubborness.
“I’m not taking back anything I say or do on this radio station, I stand on it,” McPherson said. “His action is his action. We can agree to disagree. The radio is live, I can’t take it back and I don’t take it back.
“Like I say, come at me, don’t expect it not have it come back right at you. I can’t understand you, boss. I couldn’t understand what you said. But the little bit I could make out, you were taking shots and you were incorrect. Sorry.”
McPherson, who certainly has his fair share of critics, then attempted to pour water on the incident and make it seem is if mocking one for their accents is all part of the game.
“Chippy, don’t take it personal,” McPherson said. “I couldn’t understand what you were saying, bro. We’re grown men. This is sports talk. This is debate. This is back and forth. You took a shot at me, I’ll take a shot at you. And if you take it personal, take it personal. … If you come through with an accent and you seem like you are fair, you come through with a take that seems like it’s not attacking me, then you won’t get attacked back. It’s a return serve, the end.”
McPherson has not addressed the incident on his X account as of early Thursday morning.
