The blockbuster three-team trade early Sunday morning had major financial ramifications for Luka Doncic.

But players can also sign contracts worth 35 percent of the cap once they’ve reached 10 years of service, meaning it might behoove Doncic sign a three-year extension with a player option for 2028-29, which would give him the option to hit the open market once he hits those 10 years of service.
Mavericks general manager Nico Harrison, who reportedly had concerns about Doncic’s conditioning, believes he was being proactive with the move.
“We really feel like we got ahead of what was going to be a tumultuous summer, him being eligible for the super max and also a year away from him being able to opt out of any contract,” Harrison told The Dallas Morning News. “And so we really felt like we got out in front of that. We know teams, they’ve had it out there, teams have been loading up to try to sign him once that comes available.”
