Rutgers freshman star Kiyomi McMiller was not in the lineup for the Scarlet Knights women’s basketball team for the second consecutive game amid speculation about her future with the program.

McMiller was suspended from Saturday’s game against No. 4 USC due to a “coach’s decision,” and the former five-star recruit posted to social media an apology to her fans before that contest.

The Rutgers guard was then kept off the court on Wednesday against Minnesota despite not appearing on the team’s availability report as out or questionable.

A Rutgers athletics department spokesperson told NJ.com that “the decision for McMiller not to play was a game time decision and was made after the availability report was submitted.”

McMiller has quickly become a star for the Scarlet Knights, averaging 19.9 points per game — second most in the Big Ten — and leads the team in total assists with 45.

In a since-deleted post on her Instagram, she wrote about the situation.

“I would like to apologize to my fans,” she wrote over the weekend. “I will not be playing in today’s game vs. USC, which is #4 in the country. This decision was made by my Head Coach Coquese Washington. Thank you for your continued support.”

NJ.com reported that McMiller was disciplined after a locker room altercation with a teammate after a recent game.

Washington was asked about McMiller’s absence after the loss to USC and said she wanted to keep the matter within the team.

“Well, you know, the thing with Kiyomi is, you know, we’re going to keep it internal,” Washington told reporters.

She did expand on her coaching philosophy and the impact she wants to have on her players.

The decision-making that we do that goes into this program, it’s about defining character and growing young people,” Washington said. “As we deal with different circumstances and situations, for me, the first thing is how are we impacting these young people. How am I using my position and my role as head coach to grow teenagers into young women.”

Several outlets noted that McMiller was sharing posts from upset fans who had expressed disappointment she didn’t play against USC, a game in which Rutgers lost by 50 points.

An advisor for McMiller hinted to NJ.com about a possible transfer.

“Who knows what her future looks like right now?” Leonard Ellerbe told the outlet.

McMiller’s father, Mike, attempted to dispel the speculation in an interview earlier this week with On3.

“Kiyomi’s goal was to be at Rutgers and not ever transfer,” he said. “That is still the goal. The goal is to finish the job. At this moment, we’re not looking to transfer.”

Rutgers lost again Wednesday, 76-50.
