MONTREAL — The Rangers are in no position to be letting winnable games slip through their fingers.

A season-best point streak that reached eight games with a 5-4 overtime loss to the Canadiens on Sunday night at Bell Center is not nearly enough to erase the damage of the Blueshirts’ awful stretch from the end of November through December — but it’s a start to a much-needed turnaround that needs every point it can possibly get.

Patrik Laine scored 3:20 into overtime to secure the win for the Canadiens, after the Rangers led on four separate occasions.

Goalie Jonathan Quick, who made 33 saves in the loss, was denied win No. 400 for a third time.

Montreal never let the Rangers get too far out of reach, evening up the score at two-all just over five minutes into the second period on a goal from Christian Dvorak.

Mika Zibanejad managed to regain the lead for the visitors with his first power-play goal since Dec. 11, but careless play in their own zone — a trend of the infamous 4-15 stretch the team is trying to separate itself from — was costly.

A Will Borgen turnover led to a Nick Suzuki goal that made it a 3-3 game at the 15:05 mark.

Even though Chris Kreider banged home a laser feed from Adam Fox to give the Rangers a one-goal lead heading into the third period, Juraj Slafkovsky buried a rebound at the 12:52 mark of the final frame to tie the game up for a fourth time.

The Rangers built a 2-1 lead by the first intermission despite posting just five shots on goal through the opening 20 minutes.

Hometown kid Alexis Lafreniere struck first for the Rangers, taking a long shot from K’Andre Miller — which ricocheted off the wall and over the Canadiens net — and putting it past Montreal goalie Jakub Dobes.

Brendan Gallagher later got a stick on a Dvorak shot to even the score.

It took all of 46 seconds for the Blueshirts to regain the lead, however, when Will Cuylle settled a loose puck from Zibanejad’s forechecking and whipped it in glove side for the 2-1 advantage.
