Mara echoed the sentiments of frustrated fans on Monday, telling reporters he’s “just about out of patience,” and that righting the ship “better not take too long.”
While those remarks warmed Schoen’s and Daboll’s seats, it wasn’t the right message from the top to send, according to Foxworth.
“By saying this, what you’re essentially doing is undercutting them and putting them in a position next year that every single week, they’re going be like, ‘Hey, is the patience up or not?’ The players are at home thinking, ‘Oh, our coach and our general manager are on thin ice,’” Foxworth said.
Instead of being “fun guy,” Foxworth said Mara needed to articulate that Schoen and Daboll aren’t on an 18-week timer.
“You have to say, ‘Look, I know when I made this decision these are the right guys for the job. We haven’t gone on the right path, but we had a conversation yesterday’ — whether you did or you didn’t — ‘and they presented to me a plan that I sincerely believe in and you guys will see. I don’t know about a timeline, I don’t care how long it takes, I know they’re the right guys.’ And then you can go home and tell your wife, ‘Man, I don’t know about these idiots,’ but when you are on camera, this is called leadership. This is what you do.”
The Giants are starting from scratch at the quarterback position after releasing Daniel Jones in November, less than two years into a four-year, $160 million contract extension.
Currently holding the third overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, Schoen — who joined the organization with Daboll in 2022 — said Monday he isn’t going to toss a “Hail Mary for self-preservation or anything like that.
“We have a plan in place that we believe in, and we’re going to stick with that.”
