Despite weather-related delays, the surfing competition at the 2024 Olympics resumes today with the third round of the women’s event.
Unlike the rest of the 2024 Olympics, the surfing competition is taking place 9,800 miles away from Paris in Tahiti. Why? Tahiti is part of French Polynesia, so all its citizens are French citizens who have voting rights in French elections and can live in France without visas.
Tahiti is also home to the world-renowned Teahupo’o waves, which beat out four surfing sites on mainland France to host the second-ever Olympic surfing competition.
The surfing competition is a Peacock-exclusive event, though you may be able to catch highlights on NBC’s “Primetime in Paris.” As part of NBC’s coverage, “Saturday Night Live” weekend update anchor and surfer Colin Jost is on the ground in Tahiti as a surfing correspondent — and he’s making news for all of the infections he’s sustained since touching down there.
