Defense wins championships.

At least that’s what Notre Dame and Penn State are banking on this year.

The two clubs — both of which have elite defenses — will put that theory to the test when they meet up in the Orange Bowl at Miami, FL’s Hard Rock Stadium on Thursday, Jan. 9.

To advance to this high-stakes semifinal game, Marcus Freeman’s Fighting Irish knocked off heavily-favored No. 2-ranked Georgia 23-10 in New Orlean’s Sugar Bowl. The offense wasn’t particularly effective in the contest; quarterback Riley Leonard completed 15-of-24 passes but for only 90 yards and a single touchdown. On the flip side, he also led the team in rushing, clawing his way to an 80 yard day.

Over in Arizona, James Franklin’s Nittany Lions handily defeated Boise State 31-14 in the Fiesta Bowl. They were led by a three touchdown effort from quarterback Drew Allar and 134 yards from running back Kaytran Allen. More than anything though, the defense kept the Broncos in check and Penn State never lost their lead once they scored in the first quarter.

Now, the Fighting Irish and Nittany Lions are just one win away from the College Football Championship in Atlanta on Jan. 20.

And if you want to be at the Orange Bowl to see them scrap, it isn’t too late to scoop up last-minute tickets.

About the Notre Dame-Penn State matchup

Dating back to 1913, Notre Dame and Penn State have gone head to head 19 times. They’re currently 9-9-1 against each other.

Their last matchup took place on Sept. 8, 2007; Penn State won that contest 31-10 behind QB Anthony Morelli’s 131 yards and touchdown on 12-22 passing.

Going into the 2025 Orange Bowl, the Nittany Lions are ranked sixth in the country while the Fighting Irish own the No. 7 spot.

Even though they occupy a spot below Penn State, SportsBook Review predicts Notre Dame has the edge.
