With the basketball world stunned after Luka Doncic was shipped to the Lakers, it begs the question if another blockbuster trade could come out of nowhere.

De’Aaron Fox went to the Spurs and Zach Lavine to the Kings as part of a three-team deal on Sunday and Jimmy Butler could be dealt by Thursday’s trade deadline — but those have both been long-rumored.

The Doncic deal completely blindsided everybody, even the Jazz who were involved in the trade.

Perhaps this is the beginning of a trend — one where no single player in the league is truly untouchable and the game’s biggest superstars could end up in the game’s biggest markets.

Giannis Antetokounmpo seems to think so — and he is not opposed to the idea.

“Now that a European will be the face of the Lakers, this is something new for Europe … I love it,” Antetokounmpo said. “You know what I want? I want Luka to the Lakers. I want [Nikola] Jokic to the Knicks. I want all the Europeans to go to all the big markets.”

While Antetokounmpo did have a bit of a lighthearted, frivolous tone when he said this, it might not all be fun and games.

While there really haven’t been rumors at any point in Jokic’s career surrounding him in the trade market, Antetokounmpo’s name has swirled plenty.

After winning the 2021 NBA Finals, Antetokounmpo and the Milwaukee Bucks have been trending downward and were bounced in six games by the Pacers in the first round a season ago.

That came after the arrival of Damian Lillard — with the addition of a second star not helping the Bucks’ title run.

The Greek native is now on his third head coach in that time with Doc Rivers now running the team.

Giannis: “…Now that a European will be the face of the Lakers, this is something new for Europe…I love it. Know what I want? I want Luka to Lakers, I want Jokic to Knicks, I want all the Europeans to go to all the big markets, to see something incredible…This is my dream 😆” pic.twitter.com/qYo6iq0iLf— New York Basketball (@NBA_NewYork) February 3, 2025

After a poor 2-8 start to this season, the rumors around Antetokounmpo’s future resurfaced with big-market teams at the forefront.

Antetokounmpo has expressed frustration with his team in the past following losses to the Knicks, like back in November when he said, “We didn’t compete at all,” and just three weeks ago when he said, “We gotta get our stuff together.”

He even offered very high praise to Knicks superstar Jalen Brunson, saying he is, “One of the best players in the league.”

Antetokounmpo’s wants and needs from the Bucks organization have been mostly all met in the past.

If his want of European stars being the face of the big markets carries any weight, he could wind up being involved in the next mega-blockbuster NBA deal down the road.
