The long winter of the NFL offseason is finally ending. And what better way to usher in a glorious football fall than a visit to sunny Miami for a daily fantasy vacation?
We’re choosing the Jaguars-Dolphins game for our first stack of the season because there are some wonderful values to be found — particularly on the Jags’ side.
This early in the season, some players we feel are dramatically underpriced. Some we aren’t using include Terry McLaurin ($6,200 at FanDuel), Devin Singletary ($6,300), Jerome Ford ($6,200), Javonte Williams ($6,100), Jake Ferguson ($6,000), Chris Godwin ($5,600), Diontae Johnson ($5,600), Chuba Hubbard ($5,600) and Courtland Sutton ($5,500).
We didn’t get to these guys in the roster we’re about to construct, but we feel confident using them all — even in cash games, as we expect chunky volume for all.
But our interests are narrowed by our desire to build around Jags-Dolphins. And we start by adding a pair of underpriced Jags pass catchers in Christian Kirk ($6,100) and Evan Engram ($6,200). We can toss in an affordable Trevor Lawrence ($7,400), and we’re off and running toward a Sunshine State stack.
Of course, we want some exposure to the other side, and last year’s touchdown leader, Raheem Mostert, is surprisingly cheap ($6,600) — he is healthy, and historically he produces when healthy.
Since we’re off to such a thrifty start, we’ll go ahead and add top-shelf option Tyreek Hill ($9,600) to the mix since we think there are enough additional bargains ahead to work in such a hefty salary.
With a robust collection comprising our Florida stack, we can turn our attention to another target game — Cardinals at Bills. If this game was on a Target shelf, whoever had the price gun when they put a $6,100 tag on James Conner ($6,100) would get canned. A feature RB has no business being this cheap. He averaged nearly 18 PPR points per game with Kyler Murray last season — which would be 3x the return on value if he meets that average.
We’re gonna tap the other side of that game with Dalton Kincaid ($6,800) in our Flex spot, because we are expecting this one to be a shootout, as well. We do like Kincaid, but using him here also means we unfortunately have to bypass Kenneth Walker III ($7,400) since we’re now out of possible spots for RBs, so a touch of sour with the sweet.
We’re down to just two remaining spots, and we have one more idea of how to save a bit of coin. The Giants have added to their pass rush with the trade for Brian Burns. Teamed with Dexter Lawrence and Kayvon Thibodeaux, suddenly the Big Blue D-line looks quite formidable.
And here’s the other thing: They don’t have to be otherworldly to rattle Vikings quarterback Sam Darnold. The former Jets, Panthers and 49ers QB has never fared well under pressure, and we expect the Giants should be able to apply some. So we’ll use the Giants DEF ($3,800).
There is one WR spot still open, somehow still $7,400 to spend, and no duds on the roster. We have some quality names to choose from — Brandon Aiyuk, Nico Collins, Chris Olave, DK Metcalf, DJ Moore, Drake London. But we’re going to opt for a Week 1 kickoff to the Cooper Kupp comeback tour ($7,000).
With a lineup like the one we just built, hopefully it will rain cash on our sunny squad.
Big weeks
Jared Goff QB, Lions, at Rams (FanDuel $7,500/DraftKings $6,300)
He averaged 21.35 in home games last season — which would have ranked as QB4 behind just Josh Allen, Jalen Hurts and, ahem, Joe Flacco.
Zamir White RB, Raiders, at Chargers (FD $6,400/DK $5,700)
He will get plenty of volume, and here we wouldn’t be surprised if Vegas spends much of the day playing from ahead — aiding a positive gameflow for White.
Zack Moss RB, Bengals, vs. Patriots (FD $6,900/DK $5,800)
Easy, we still like Chase Brown better over the season. But the Bengals should be able to walk past the Pats, which means plenty of clock-killing action for Moss.
Diontae Johnson WR, Panthers, at Saints (FD $5,600/DK $5,300)
Remember Adam Thielen’s surge to start last season? We’re looking at Johnson for that this year — and hopefully it will last longer.
Small weaks
Brock Purdy QB, 49ers, vs. Jets (FD $7,400/DK $6,200)
The Jets’ secondary is no joke. And with little preseason work with Brandon Aiyuk and Christian McCaffrey dealing with calf issues, this won’t be the week San Fran is clicking at its best.
Najee Harris RB, Steelers, at Falcons (FD $6,700/DK $5,600)
Jaylen Warren is expected to play, which means we can trust Steelers offensive coordinator Arthur Smith to make sure we can trust no one in the Pittsburgh running game.
D’Andre Swift RB, Bears, vs. Titans (FD $6,500/DK $6,000)
Swift wasn’t great with a good Eagles offense and O-line last season. As improved as the Bears might be, it is still a downgrade. Plus, there are a lot of other weapons, and competition for touches in the backfield.
Stefon Diggs WR, Texans, at Colts (FD $6,800/DK $6,700)
Betting on the NFL?
We’re not convinced Diggs is gonna shine in Houston. We think he might be the odd man out among Nico Collins and Tank Dell. Make him prove himself before playing him, if you can.
