What of the holiday friendship, asks self-assured horror Speak No Evil? Tread carefully, it warns, with the strangers making small talk over a Tuscan sunset. That deeply first-world problem is the root of this redo of a well-received Danish chiller from 2022. Mischievously, British director James Watkins now uses a dull Dane to bring together two couples on scenic vacation, each with tweenage children. One are a pair of American innocents lately relocated to the UK (Mackenzie Davis and Scoot McNairy). Assertively befriending them are a bullish Devon doctor and his wife (James McAvoy and Aisling Franciosi). Back home, an invitation follows to reunite in an English countryside that Straw Dogs and An American Werewolf in London should have taught any sane person to avoid. The rest sees three movies jostle for space. A dark comedy of middle-class manners is given oomph by McAvoy’s portrait of a certain type of big English personality. But we also get a spiky fable about parents and parenting, which leads in turn to flat-out scares. You may find those the least interesting aspect of the film, while still suddenly questioning your next summer getaway. You suspect Watkins would smile at the thought.★★★☆☆In UK and US cinemas from September 13
