In a grim turn of events, a daily newspaper published a photo of her execution (by electric chair) the next day — demonstrating that grisly clickbait is nothing new. Six months later the dramatist Sophie Treadwell delivered an infinitely more humane response: this astonishingly modern, expressionist play. In Richard Jones’s super, stark production (seen at Bath’s Ustinov Studio last year), it tears off the stage as if written yesterday, led by an outstanding performance from Rosie Sheehy. Treadwell works the basics of Snyder’s story into an intense drama about female oppression and the soul-sapping effect of the rat-race. Here we watch as an (unnamed) young woman is pushed to breaking point by the restrictions placed upon her. It’s tough and intense, but also peppered with dry wit and lacerating sarcasm. We first meet the woman as she takes a packed subway train to a stifling office, where the staff snigger, gossip and talk in clichés. We watch her trundle through life, like a package on a conveyor belt — into work, into a loveless marriage, into a harrowing childbirth — and then tumble off the end into an affair where she finds joy, but also, most significantly, the prospect of freedom.
Jones meets Treadwell’s splintered, staccato style with a staging of hallucinatory force. The virulent yellow walls of Hyemi Shin’s set narrow to a corner, creating a nightmarish sense of claustrophobia. The office staff’s clipped movements are projected as huge shadows on the walls, where they appear welded to their typewriters — cogs in a wealth-making machine. We feel trapped, together with Sheehy’s heroine, who frequently gasps for air or slides along the walls towards the doors and windows. The noises — of the subway, a ticking clock, a pneumatic drill — seem to bore into her: there’s a strong suggestion that she is already mentally fragile and tips into a postnatal breakdown. In one memorable scene, Sheehy lies motionless on a hospital trolley while her husband, a nurse and a string of (male) doctors talk to an empty space beside her — a potent image of dislocation. Sheehy is superb: frozen at some points, juddering violently at others, her character feels profoundly alienated from a clattering world that cares little for her wellbeing or her state of mind. It’s a brave, searingly physical performance. There’s great work too from Tim Frances as the self-satisfied husband and Pierro Niel-Mee as the evasive lover. Cleverly, Treadwell doesn’t show us key events — the marriage, the sex, the birth, the murder — but the impact of them, the way the links in the chain are forged. Hands become a leitmotif: the woman’s soft hands, her husband’s fat, flabby hands, the gloves that will help to convict her. And at the end, Jones has all those who have been part of her journey line up and place their hands on one another’s backs as if passing a current along. Horrific.
